An open hearth this size pulls cold-air drafts into the room and sends most of its heat up an aging clay flue — it can run a net heat loss even with a roaring fire. If you're going to burn responsibly sourced wood, don't feed it to a firebox that throws it away. A sealed EPA insert with a correctly sized liner runs 70% efficient or better and keeps the mantel and surround you love intact.
Where the wood should come from
The most sustainable firewood was already coming down — storm-fall, land-clearing, arborist wood, dead standing trees — and there's plenty of it around Historic Flat Rock and Kanuga. Buy it seasoned from a Henderson County producer, ask where it was cut, and favor hardwood. Sourcing close to home keeps insect pests out of new woods and gets you fresher wood at a better price than a trucked-in load.
