Sylva has a lot of student and rental housing that gets used hard and maintained unevenly, and the temptation in a cold rental is to burn whatever's around — construction offcuts, old pallets, painted or treated scraps. Don't. That stuff releases nasty smoke and coats a chimney fast. Sustainable firewood is seasoned hardwood that was already coming down: storm-fall, land-clearing, arborist trimmings. Buy it from a Jackson County producer, keep it local so pests stay put, and you'll heat cleaner and safer.
The Tuckasegee valley fights your seasoning
Cold air drains down the Tuckasegee valley and river moisture rusts dampers and degrades flue liners fast — the same damp that makes wood slow to dry. Give cordwood the full six to twelve months, split and stacked off wet ground with only the top covered, and confirm it's under 20% moisture before you burn. The historic homes over in Dillsboro have older masonry chimneys that especially can't afford the creosote wet wood leaves.
Get the chimney inspected first
If you're renting or just bought an older place with an unknown fireplace history, have it inspected before the season — a river-valley flue that's rusted or lined poorly isn't safe on any wood.
