How do I keep birds and animals from nesting in my fireplace vent or chimney?

A proper cap with animal-and-spark screening is the answer — a stainless chimney cap for a masonry flue, or the intact factory screen on a gas vent termination. It keeps birds, squirrels, raccoons, and wasps out while letting exhaust escape. If something's already nesting, don't try to smoke it out; have it removed and the cap installed or repaired professionally.

A cap is the single best defense

For a masonry chimney, a well-fitted stainless cap with mesh sides blocks animals and sparks while shedding rain off the flue. For a direct-vent or B-vent gas fireplace, the factory termination already has a screen built in — the job is keeping it clean and intact.

A missing, rusted, or crushed cap is an open invitation. We pull chimney swifts, starlings, and squirrels out of older Asheville flues every season, and now and then a raccoon that decided the smoke shelf made a fine den.

If they've already moved in

Do not light a fire to drive them out. Chimney swifts and many other birds are federally protected, a fire won't reliably clear a packed nest, and a blocked flue means smoke, carbon monoxide, or a nest fire pushed back into your home.

The right move is to have the nest removed, the flue inspected for damage and blockage, and the cap repaired or replaced so it can't happen again.

Keeping them out for good

An annual inspection catches a compromised cap or an early nest before it becomes a problem. Between visits, trim branches overhanging the chimney — easy to forget on a wooded mountain lot — and keep the cap screen clear of debris.

Spring is peak nesting season, so a late-summer or fall sweep clears out anything that moved in over the warm months before you burn. Call (828) 545-0525 to schedule a cap check or installation.
