Because gas piping is licensed work in North Carolina, also confirm the gas-contractor license, and given Brevard's 80-plus inches of rain, confirm outdoor lines are outdoor-rated and pressure-tested.
Transylvania County, and who answers for the permit
Brevard sits in Transylvania County, so the permit and inspection run through Transylvania's office, not Buncombe's. A qualified installer knows exactly whose jurisdiction your address falls in and pulls the permit there as a matter of course. If a contractor is vague about which county signs off — or suggests skipping it 'to save you a little' — that's your answer. In NC, the gas connection is licensed work; a hearth showroom or a landscaper legally can't make it. Rain is the local enemy
Brevard's crawl spaces and chimney chases are unusually moisture-prone, and 80-plus inches of annual rain cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers. That wet reality changes what a qualified install looks like: buried and outdoor propane lines have to be outdoor-rated and properly protected, connections get pressure-tested before they're ever charged, and a corroded old flue may need relining before a sealed unit goes in.
