How do I set a timer so my gas fireplace shuts off on its own?
Many gas fireplace remotes have a countdown timer that shuts the burner off after a set interval — commonly in half-hour steps, up to several hours. On a Napoleon, Heat & Glo, or Majestic hand-held remote, hold the timer button, use the up/down arrows to set the run time, and the fireplace turns itself off when the clock expires.
Timer vs. thermostat — two different jobs
The timer is a simple countdown: you set it, the fire runs, and when the clock hits zero the valve closes — no matter the room temperature. That's the tool you want for falling asleep on the couch or stepping out for the evening. Thermostat mode is different — it cycles the burner to hold a target temperature. Some remotes let you run both at once, and the timer becomes a hard backstop that shuts everything down even when thermostat mode would otherwise keep going.
Setting it on the common remotes
The exact buttons vary by brand, but the pattern is nearly universal. Wake the remote, find the clock or timer button, press and hold until the display flashes, then use the arrows to dial in the run time. Napoleon, Heat & Glo IntelliFire, Majestic IntelliFire Touch, and Mendota hand-helds all follow this logic. On app-controlled units — Heatilator and Majestic with IntelliFire, for one — the timer lives in the phone app instead, which is handier if you tend to misplace the remote. A word on unattended running
A timer is a convenience, not a safety device — direct-vent gas fireplaces are built to run safely — but its real value is peace of mind, so you're not lying awake wondering whether you left the fire on.
