How do I size a wood-burning insert to my firebox?
Measure your masonry firebox's width, height, and depth — at the front and the back, since fireboxes taper — then match to an insert whose body fits inside all three with clearance to spare, and whose heat output suits your room. Wood inserts are heavy and deep, so depth and a masonry (not prefab) firebox are the make-or-break factors.
The six measurements to take
Take front width and rear width, height at the front opening and at the back, and depth at the floor front-to-back. Wood fireboxes almost always narrow and shorten toward the rear, and a wood insert's firebox is a solid, deep steel box — so the rear numbers usually decide the fit, not the generous front opening you eyeball.

Masonry only, and mind the weight
Wood-burning inserts are listed for masonry fireplaces with masonry chimneys — not factory-built prefab boxes. They're also heavy, often several hundred pounds, so a solid masonry hearth is part of the equation.
And every wood insert needs a correctly sized stainless liner run up your chimney to the top. That's non-negotiable for draft and safety, and it's part of what we install.
Size to the room, not just the hole
Bigger isn't better. An insert built to heat 1,500 square feet in a 400-square-foot den will run you out of the room, or force you to smolder it, which fouls the glass and the flue. We match firebox size and BTU output to the space you actually want to heat — the honest call, not the priciest one.
