On a well-built installation, the metal burner pan has weep holes or a drain fitting at its low point, and the masonry or block enclosure underneath is built over a gravel bed or tied to a drain line. Rain falls through the fire glass or lava rock, drops into the pan, and runs straight out the bottom, away from the burner and the gas connections.
