How does converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas actually work?

Flat Rock's housing stock drives the conversation — many homes date to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners. A sealed gas insert tucks into that historic opening, preserves the character, and stops the cold-air draft an old open hearth pulls into the room. A vented log set is the lighter-touch option. Either way, licensed gas line first.

Historic hearths, modern performance

Some of Flat Rock's homes go back to the 1800s, built with big open fireboxes and clay flue liners that are now well past their prime. An open masonry hearth like that can actually run a net heat loss — pulling cold outdoor air down and warm room air up the chimney around the clock. A sealed gas insert fixes exactly that: it seals the opening, vents through a new stainless liner that replaces the tired clay flue, and preserves the historic look while finally making the fireplace warm the room instead of chilling it.

Keeping the look, gaining the heat

The trade-off between paths is real here. An insert commonly hits 70% efficiency or better against an open firebox that loses heat, so it's the choice when you're actually trying to warm the space. If you only want the ambiance in a formal room, a Real Fyre vented log set — hand-painted and cast from real oak — gives you the most realistic decorative flame inside that preserved opening.
