How does the pipe-within-a-pipe (coaxial) vent on a direct vent fireplace work?

The coaxial vent is two pipes in one: exhaust leaves through the hot inner pipe while fresh outdoor combustion air is drawn in through the outer ring around it. One penetration through the wall or roof handles intake and exhaust together, keeps the fire fully sealed off from your room, and warms the incoming air on its way in for a steadier burn.

One pipe, two jobs

Picture a smaller pipe centered inside a larger one. The fire's exhaust rises through the inner pipe and exits at a termination cap outside. At that same cap, outside air enters the ring-shaped gap between the two pipes and travels backward along the run into the sealed firebox, feeding the flame. Intake and exhaust move in opposite directions through the same assembly, and the room air on the other side of the glass never mixes with either stream.

The incoming air wraps around the hot exhaust pipe, so it arrives pre-warmed — a steadier, more efficient flame, which matters on a 15-degree January night in the mountains when a fire is gulping frigid outside air.
