How far can a direct-vent fireplace's vent run horizontally?
It depends on the specific unit — each manufacturer publishes a maximum total vent length in the manual, and the straight-horizontal portion is only part of that budget. Every elbow and every foot of vertical rise you add subtracts from what's left. Short runs out an exterior wall are easy; longer or interior-wall runs need careful planning. It's a budget, not a single number
There's no one magic distance, because direct-vent systems work off a total equivalent length. The manufacturer's vent table gives you a maximum, then charges you for the route: each 90- or 45-degree elbow counts as several feet of that budget, and many units require a minimum vertical rise before a long horizontal leg will draft properly.
So a fireplace with a straight shot out the back can run one distance, while the same unit forced to jog around framing runs less. The manual is always the authority.
Why it varies so much
The number moves with the unit's BTU output, its pipe diameter, and the brand's engineering. A small Napoleon Ascent going out an exterior wall a few feet away barely uses its budget. A bigger linear unit on an interior wall in a two-story home may need to climb into the attic and out the roof to stay in spec.
In older WNC homes with thick walls and additions tacked on over the decades, the honest run length only reveals itself once we're looking at the actual framing.
