How long does a gas fire pit or fire table last before it needs replacing?
A well-built gas fire pit lasts many years — often a decade or two — when the burner and pan are stainless or brass and it gets covered or serviced. Cheaper aluminum or thin powder-coated steel left out in WNC weather can start rusting and failing in just a few seasons. Materials and care decide it, not the calendar.
What actually wears out
The parts that set a fire pit's lifespan are the burner and the pan beneath it. A stainless or brass burner shrugs off heat and moisture for a decade or two; a plain-steel burner rusts from the inside and fails far sooner. The enclosure matters next — cast aluminum, natural stone, and quality concrete last, while thin coated steel and low-grade castings don't.
Fire glass and lava rock aren't the unit — they're consumables. You top them up or refresh them every few years as they discolor, and that's normal maintenance, not a sign the pit is done.
Why the mountains are hard on them
Our winters are wet, and freeze-thaw is brutal on outdoor fire features. Water that seeps into a concrete or GFRC table and freezes will spall and crack it, and standing water in the burner pan rusts steel and corrodes connections. A pit that's covered when idle, drained after rain, and kept off soggy ground will outlast an identical one left exposed — by years.

Repair or replace
Most of the time, what looks like a dying fire pit is one tired part — an igniter, a thermocouple, a burner — and those are inexpensive to swap.
