How many square feet will a 30,000 BTU gas fireplace heat?
A 30,000 BTU gas fireplace comfortably heats roughly 1,000 to 1,500 square feet in a moderate climate — but in Western North Carolina, plan on the lower end, closer to 750 to 1,200, depending on insulation, ceiling height, and how cold your particular spot gets. As a zone heater for one open living area, 30,000 BTUs is a strong, common size.
The quick math — and the mountain adjustment
Run the rule of thumb backward: at roughly 20 BTUs per square foot, 30,000 BTUs points at about 1,500 square feet in a mild climate. Our winters aren't mild. On an exposed ridge lot in Fairview or an older, leaky farmhouse outside Weaverville, that same unit realistically covers closer to 1,000 square feet or a bit less. In a tight, well-insulated new build in south Asheville, it'll do better. The building matters as much as the BTU number.
What 'heats' really means
There's a difference between taking the chill off and being your primary warmth. Thirty thousand BTUs is a genuine heater — plenty for a great room, an open kitchen-living space, or a main floor with a reasonably open plan. It is not designed to push heat down a hallway into three closed bedrooms; fireplaces heat the space they're in and the rooms open to it, not the whole house. The oversizing trap
Thirty thousand BTUs in a small 250-square-foot den is too much — it overheats the room and you end up shutting it down half the evening, which defeats the point.
