Around Sandy Mush and Turkey Creek, plenty of homes still heat primarily with wood, and on clear winter nights cold air pools in these valleys and drops temperatures well below Asheville's. That means longer, harder burning and more cords a season, so getting dry, high-heat wood matters. Buy a true full cord — 128 cubic feet, not a rick — green in spring so it seasons all summer.

On big properties, plenty of folks cut their own; just remember that felled wood still needs six to twelve months split and stacked before it burns clean.

When the Power Line Is the Weak Link

Some remote Leicester properties have limited electrical capacity, which makes non-electric heat more than a preference.
