How much does a see-through double-sided fireplace cost, and why is it so much more expensive?

Why the premium is real

A see-through firebox is engineered to be watched — and sealed — from both sides. You're paying for two panes of ceramic glass, a burner and media presented cleanly to two rooms, and clearance requirements enforced in both directions. The vent path is more constrained too: with glass where a back wall would normally be, the unit is far pickier about where the flue can exit, which often means a longer or more complex run than a standard direct-vent install.

Framing matters as well — the chase has to hold clearances on two open faces, which takes more structure than tucking a box against an exterior wall. None of that is padding; it's genuinely more engineering and more material.

Two rooms, two finish budgets

This is the part people underestimate. A single-sided fireplace gets one surround; a see-through gets two — two walls of tile or stone, two sets of framing, sometimes two mantels, and floors in two rooms meeting the unit cleanly. Whatever finish budget you had in mind, plan to roughly double it. The silver lining: one gas line, one permit, and one inspection serve both faces, so a see-through still costs meaningfully less than building two separate fireplaces back to back. We quote both sides' finish scope up front so nothing lands as a surprise at the end.

Is it the right way to spend the money?

Sometimes, absolutely. Between a great room and a dining room — or a kitchen and a hearth room — one see-through can anchor an entire floor plan in a way nothing else matches, and in the timber-frame and mountain-modern homes we work on around Cashiers and Brevard it's often the signature move of the whole build.
