How much does a ton of wood pellets cost and how long does it last?
Plenty of Clyde's 1960s-80s ranch homes have dated fireplaces that are prime candidates for a pellet or wood insert — a real efficiency jump over the original box. A ton of pellets is fifty 40-pound bags and lasts a few weeks to a couple of months on main heat; the price is a supplier's call that rises once winter demand sets in.
Retrofitting the ranch-era fireplace
Those dated Clyde fireboxes were never efficient, and a sealed pellet insert with a correctly sized liner puts far more of each bag's heat into the living room instead of up the chimney — inserts commonly run 70% or better. The install keeps the existing hearth and surround, so it's a clean upgrade rather than a remodel. Storage in damp river country
Clyde shares Canton and Waynesville's cold-air drainage, and river humidity here rusts dampers and degrades masonry — the same damp that destroys pellets. A ton has to sit truly dry, up on a pallet, well away from a sweating garage or basement wall. Kept dry, count a bag a day on main heat, six or seven weeks per ton, and two to three tons for a Haywood County winter at nearly 2,600 feet. Buy early, before prices climb.
Permit, liner, and the power caveat
Any insert into an existing chimney is permitted work — we pull it with Haywood County, size the liner, and meet the inspector, which protects your insurance and your home's resale.
