How much does it cost to add a fireplace to a house that doesn't have one?
In Swannanoa, a wave of first-fireplace demand has come out of storm rebuilds — new installs going into repaired homes, many chosen for backup heat. Budget a few hundred for electric, $3,500–$8,000 for a sealed direct-vent gas unit installed, or $4,000–$12,000 for a fully vented gas or wood build. We're 15 minutes east.
Rebuilds are driving the first-fireplace boom
The Swannanoa Valley took heavy storm damage, and the rebuilding and renovation underway has pushed a lot of homeowners to add a fireplace or stove they never had before — often specifically for heat that works when the grid doesn't. When power went out across WNC for days, the homes that stayed warm were the ones with a working wood or gas hearth. A Regency wood fireplace gives you total grid independence; a Napoleon Ascent 36 with battery-backup ignition keeps gas heat running with the power off. Either belongs in a rebuild you're already opening up.
Grovemont's old masonry, and damp valley air
The Grovemont-area homes from the 1940s through the '60s came with original masonry fireplaces, but where a room never had one, we don't rebuild a chimney — we vent a sealed direct-vent unit out a sidewall. That's the better answer in a river valley where fog, cold-air pooling, and damp air are hard on masonry. Swannanoa is on natural-gas mains, so line runs are typically short.
