How much does it cost to convert a gas fireplace between natural gas and propane?

Black Mountain's downtown and valley sit on natural gas, but Montreat's wooded lots and the higher pockets often run on propane — so a fireplace moving between the two is the classic conversion here. The burner swap stays small: kit, orifices, pressure, pilot. What sets the cost is the gas line or LP setup on either end. We're 15 minutes east, and the visit's free.

The Montreat-to-town fuel gap

Because the Swannanoa Valley floor has gas mains while Montreat and the shaded upper lots lean on propane, we regularly convert units that cross that line — a propane cabin fireplace coming down to a natural-gas home, or the reverse. The two fuels don't share orifices or pressure, so any unit that changes fuel has to be re-set to match, or it burns dirty and never reaches its rated output. Tell us which way you're headed and we'll spec the exact kit your model needs.

Cold mornings mean the conversion has to be right

Temperature inversions pool cold air in the valley, running Black Mountain and Montreat ten to fifteen degrees colder than Asheville on clear mornings, so a hearth that's dialed in properly matters. The conversion parts are inexpensive; the total moves only if we're also extending a natural-gas line or setting a propane regulator and tank connection. We pull the permit with Buncombe County and meet the inspector, then pressure-test — that's licensed gas work, not a handyman job.

A quick, free look

Being just 15 minutes east, we can get out to look fast. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll confirm your kit's still available, check the fuel side, and quote it upfront before anything begins. If an older unit's kit has been discontinued, we'll tell you whether a swap makes more sense than a conversion.
