How much does it cost to move a fireplace to a different wall or room?
Price it as a new installation plus a removal, not a furniture move. The new wall needs its own vent path, an extended gas line, framing, and finish work; the old spot needs the unit pulled, the line capped and pressure-checked, and the penetrations closed up. That's why the new-location side alone typically prices like a fresh $3,500–$8,000 gas install.
Why 'moving' really means 'reinstalling'
Almost nothing about a fireplace transplants cleanly. The vent components are cut and terminated for the old location and rarely reuse; the framing and surround stay behind in the wall; and an older firebox may not be worth reinstalling once you weigh its condition against the labor to move it. So the new wall gets what amounts to a fresh installation — vent path, extended gas line, framing, finish — and prices accordingly. That's why most 'move it' conversations become 'replace it' conversations once numbers hit the table: for similar money you get a new unit with a warranty instead of a used one with a history. Gas log sets are the one exception — a set in good shape can sometimes make the trip.
The old location has its own bill
Budget for the goodbye, too. The unit comes out, the gas line gets capped and pressure-checked, the vent penetration through the wall or roof gets properly closed and weathered, and the hole where a fireplace used to be needs framing and finish repair. We handle the fire-and-gas side of all of that; drywall and paint usually fold into whatever remodel prompted the move. Don't let anyone skip the cap-and-test step — orphaned gas stubs hiding in walls are something we find during remodels all over older Asheville homes, and they're never fun news.
When the move is worth it
