How much gas does a fireplace use per hour at full input?

Right here in Asheville, a gas fireplace burns close to its BTU input rating every hour it runs wide open — our best-selling Napoleon Ascent 36 is rated 26,500 BTU, so on high it pulls about 26,500 BTU of natural gas an hour. On the city's metered mains that's roughly 26 cubic feet, and it drops fast the moment you turn the flame down.

Watching it on your metered gas bill

Because Montford, West Asheville, and North Asheville sit on natural-gas mains, your fuel shows up as CCF or therms on the monthly bill rather than a tank gauge. Natural gas carries about 1,000 BTU per cubic foot, so translate the input rating straight across: a 26,500 BTU unit is roughly 0.27 therm an hour on high, a 40,000 BTU linear like the Napoleon Vector 50 about 0.40. That's the ceiling — the number you'd only hit running full fire the whole time, which almost nobody does.

Cold spring nights, short runtimes

Elevation keeps our nights in the 20s well into spring, so a fireplace here earns its keep on the shoulder seasons when firing up the whole furnace makes no sense. Heating the one room you're sitting in for a few hours sips fuel next to conditioning a whole house you're not using. Most units we install in town modulate or ride comfortably on a lower setting once the room warms, so real burn lands well under the spec number.

Sizing it right from the showroom

The input rating is where fuel use starts, but the right size for your room is what keeps you off the top setting all evening. Since we're headquartered at 629 Emma Rd, it's easy to see these units lit in the showroom and walk through the numbers before anything goes in. We'll match input to your square footage and layout during a free in-home assessment. Call (828) 545-0525.
