How much more does a custom built-in fire pit cost than a fire pit kit or fire table?

A fire table or kit is mostly the cost of the unit itself; a custom built-in adds masonry or hardscape work, a burner and pan sized to the design, a trenched and buried gas line, and a county permit — line items the kit never sees. What the kit or table actually includes
A fire table or kit is mostly appliance: burner, media, an enclosure or pan, and a regulator for the propane tank. Napoleon's Uptown fire table, for instance, delivers 60,000 BTU on LP with nothing built and nothing buried — rearrange the patio next summer and it moves with you. A drop-in kit set into hardscape you already own splits the difference: some assembly and a gas connection, but no new structure. Tables also skip the permit conversation in most cases, since nothing is buried and nothing is permanent — the tank and regulator do the work.
What custom construction adds — line by line
A built-in adds four bills a kit never sees: the structure itself, in stone or block, usually built by our hardscape partners while we handle everything that burns; a burner and pan sized to the design rather than pulled off a shelf; a trenched, buried, outdoor-rated gas line; and the permit and inspection that make it legal. In North Carolina that buried line is licensed work — we pull the permit with your county, Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, or Transylvania, and meet the inspector ourselves. Trench footage and stone selection are the two levers that swing the total most; a long run across a sloped Weaverville yard costs real money before the first stone is set.
Choosing without overspending
Our honest rule: if you're still figuring out how you use the patio, start with a table — it's most of the joy for a fraction of the spend. If the outdoor space is finished and permanent, the built-in is worth it and looks it.
