If I burn my fireplace every day all winter, does it need service more than once a year?
Right here in Asheville it depends on your neighborhood's fireplace. A gas unit in a South Asheville clean-face install run daily is usually fine on once-a-year service. But an original masonry wood firebox in Montford or North Asheville, burned every night, can build enough creosote to justify a mid-winter chimney check. Fuel and firebox decide it.

The answer splits along the same line the city's housing does. The original masonry fireboxes in Montford and North Asheville were built a century ago for wood, and a household that actually heats with one every night from November on stacks creosote faster than a weekend user — enough that we'd want eyes on the flue around mid-January rather than waiting for next fall.
Our elevation stretches that risk, too. Nights stay in the 20s into early spring, so the season you're burning through runs longer than the calendar suggests, and every extra fire adds to the buildup.
Newer gas, lighter touch
South Asheville's clean-face gas installs — a Napoleon Ascent, a Heat & Glo great-room unit — burn without creosote, so daily use rarely moves the once-a-year interval. What heavy use does is haze the glass, load the blower with dust, and film the media, none of it urgent.
If you're running one hard and the flame looks different, a mid-winter glass-and-flame tune is money well spent. The pilot, valve, and venting are fine on the annual schedule.
