In a remodel, should I put a gas insert in my old fireplace or tear it out for a new built-in unit?

In Candler's fast-growing subdivisions the fireplace is often a basic decorative builder-grade box, and owners here want real heat within a few years — a sealed insert is the usual upgrade where the firebox is sound. Tear out for a new built-in when that box is a failing prefab or you're reworking the wall. Out in Hominy Valley, plan on propane.

Decorative from the builder, real heat now

A lot of Candler's newer homes came with a firebox that was decorative from day one — nice to look at, not built to warm the room. That's exactly the situation an insert was made for: a sealed gas unit turns that hollow box into a 70-percent-efficient heater without a full remodel. If the existing box is a builder-grade prefab that's cracked or aging out, though, replacing it with a proper sealed built-in is the sounder call than retrofitting a tired shell.

Clean burning matters in the bowl

Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl that can trap air, which is one more reason a sealed appliance beats an open fire here — combustion is vented straight outside, not into the valley air or your living room. Out on the rural lots this is propane country, so the unit gets configured for LP with the right orifices and pressures; a wrong-fuel setup soots and pollutes. Getting the fuel right is licensed work, and it's ours to do.

Fifteen minutes, same county

Candler is a quick fifteen minutes west of our Asheville showroom, in the Buncombe County we permit in every day. Whether you keep the firebox or build new, we pull the permit, run and pressure-test the gas or propane line, and meet the inspector — the accountability of one licensed company from appliance to sign-off.
