Is a carbon monoxide check part of a gas fireplace service?

Yes. Verifying safe combustion and venting is central to every gas fireplace service — we confirm the unit burns clean, the venting draws properly, and nothing is spilling combustion products into the room. On sealed direct-vent units the CO risk is very low by design, but we still check the seal, the flame, and the vent, and we'll flag any home missing a CO detector.

How the fireplace type changes the risk

Direct-vent gas fireplaces — the sealed, safest default we install most — pull combustion air from outside and push exhaust straight back out through a coaxial pipe, with a fixed glass front separating the fire from your air. Done right, the room and the fire never mix, so CO in the living space is a non-issue when the seal and vent are intact. That's exactly what we verify: the glass gasket, the vent run, the termination outside. Vent-free units are the other story — they burn into the room by design and rely on an oxygen-depletion sensor that shuts the unit off if oxygen drops. What the service actually verifies

A clean-burning gas flame produces almost no carbon monoxide; a starved or misadjusted one produces more. So the CO question is really a combustion-quality question, and the service answers it: correct gas pressure, clean burner ports, proper flame color and shape, logs and embers placed to the manufacturer's diagram so nothing impinges the flame, and a vent that's drawing and unobstructed. A yellow, sooty, lazy flame is the warning sign we chase down — it means incomplete combustion, and it's usually a dirty burner or a mispositioned log from the last cleaning.

Detectors are your backstop

Servicing keeps the appliance safe; a CO detector protects you between visits. Every home with any fuel-burning appliance should have a working carbon monoxide detector, tested regularly and replaced on the manufacturer's schedule — most need replacing every five to ten years, depending on the model.
