The homes north of downtown — Montford, the streets off Charlotte and Kimberly — often still run their original masonry chimneys, clay tiles laid in the early 1900s and mortar that's weathered a hundred freeze-thaw winters. What we find in one that's sat idle: a rusted-open damper, nesting packed on the smoke shelf, and cracked tiles nobody could see from the hearth. South Asheville's newer construction is a different animal — usually a sealed gas firebox where the off-season enemy is a pilot assembly clogged by dust and spiders and a gas valve that hasn't cycled in years.
