Is a gas fireplace or a pellet stove better for heating a home?
In historic Flat Rock, the choice usually favors a gas insert over a pellet stove for one reason: character. These 1800s homes have oversized open masonry fireplaces with aging clay flue liners, and a sealed gas insert tucks into that original firebox — heating the room while keeping the mantel and hearth intact. A pellet stove is a freestanding box that changes the look. On natural gas here, gas heats with far less fuss.
Keeping the firebox, gaining the heat
Flat Rock's oversized open hearths are beautiful and terrible heaters — they pull cold-air drafts into the room and send warm air up the chimney.
