Is a gas fireplace worth it purely as backup heat for winter power outages?
In Candler, yes — and the fuel picture shapes the plan. Newer Enka-Candler subdivisions may tie into a gas main, but much of Candler runs on propane out toward Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway. Either way the fuel needs no grid, so a millivolt or battery-backup gas fireplace heats right through an outage.
Know your fuel, then spec for it
Candler is growing fast, and the fuel underfoot isn't uniform — the newer subdivisions closer to Enka may reach a natural-gas main, while a lot of the rural stretches toward Hominy Valley and the Pisgah Highway run on a propane tank in the yard. For backup heat, both work: a pressurized main stays pressurized through an outage, and a propane tank is fuel you already own. What matters is ignition — millivolt or Napoleon battery-backup, not electronic-with-no-battery, which dies with the power.
Builder-grade decorative, upgraded to real heat
A lot of Candler's fast-built subdivisions came with basic decorative fireboxes — pretty flame, little heat — and owners want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years. The Hominy Valley bowl also traps air, so clean-burning sealed combustion is worth having for air quality. A sealed direct-vent unit like the Napoleon Ascent answers both: cleaner burn, real heat, and it keeps running with the grid down. American-made Kozy Heat is a strong propane-side pick, and the Valor H5 goes furthest — radiant heat, no electricity.
Buncombe permit, 15 minutes west
As the licensed gas contractor we pull the Buncombe County permit, run and pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector — the connection a showroom or mason legally can't make, and propane in particular needs the right orifices and pressures or it soots. We're 15 minutes west of the showroom. After Helene left WNC dark for days, outage-ready heat is worth building in. Call (828) 545-0525.
