Is a gas or wood-burning outdoor fireplace better?
Brevard is propane country, and that shapes the answer. Out here — downtown lots and the cabins toward Connestee Falls and Pisgah Forest — most homes run on a tank, so a gas outdoor fireplace means we size the propane and line to feed it. Wood's still a strong pick, but Transylvania's heavy rain is hard on masonry chimneys.
Propane, sized right, is the workhorse
Along the Asheville and Hendersonville mains, gas is nearly effortless to feed — Brevard is a different world. Here you're on propane, so a gas outdoor fireplace runs off a tank we size to the firebox and the burn time you want, with the right orifices and pressure for LP, which burns hotter per unit than natural gas and soots badly if set up wrong. That's licensed gas work in North Carolina — the propane supplier drops the tank, but connecting the regulator, piping, and appliance is our lane, and a hardscaper laying your patio legally can't touch it. We pull the Transylvania County permit and pressure-test every line.
Rain is wood's real challenge here
Brevard catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that's the quiet argument against a wood-burning outdoor fireplace if it isn't built for the climate. All that water cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers — a masonry wood chimney out here needs a stainless cap and honest waterproofing or it degrades fast. Wood still delivers the crackle and coals nothing else matches, and on an open cabin lot it's a beautiful choice. But if you'd rather not maintain a chimney against that kind of moisture, a sealed propane firebox gives you fire with far less upkeep.
