With a rented tank, the propane company owns it, maintains it, recertifies it, and swaps it if it fails — all their problem, not yours. The tradeoff is that you buy gas from whoever owns the tank, at their price. That lock-in is where renters lose money over time, because you can't shop the per-gallon rate when prices spike in a cold January.

Owning: freedom that takes years to pay off

Own the tank and every supplier in Western North Carolina will compete for your fill. That freedom is genuinely valuable — if you're burning serious gallons. A whole-home propane setup running a furnace, water heater, range, and fireplace can justify ownership. But a fireplace by itself sips fuel compared to those appliances, and the savings from shopping gas prices scale with gallons burned. Buy a tank to feed one fireplace and you may wait a long time to break even, all while owning the maintenance and recertification responsibility yourself.

The tank itself — rented or purchased — gets coordinated with your propane supplier; that's their side of the fence.
