Is it cheaper to run a fireplace on natural gas or propane?

In Sylva, fuel runs both ways: where a natural-gas main reaches you it's the cheaper heat, and out toward Cullowhee and Balsam many homes are on propane. Gas beats propane per BTU when it's available, but Sylva's real cost story is the hard-used, poorly maintained fireplaces that waste whatever fuel they burn.

Rentals burn what they're not maintaining

A lot of Sylva's housing serves students and renters near Western Carolina — heavily used, inconsistently maintained. A fireplace that hasn't been serviced burns dirty and inefficient, quietly costing more on gas or propane than it should. The cheapest fuel in town is the one going through a clean, tuned burner. An annual service before the cold, clearing the off-season spiders and dust from the pilot and orifices, is the single best return on either fuel.

River moisture is eating the chimneys

The Tuckasegee valley drains cold air and holds river moisture, and it rusts dampers and degrades flue liners faster than you'd expect — a real problem in the historic Dillsboro homes with older masonry chimneys. A corroded flue leaks heat and eventually money. A sealed direct-vent unit skips the failing flue and holds its heat in the room, which matters more than the gas-versus-propane split for most of these houses.

Farther out means service discipline

Sylva is about 50 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, so the smart move is preventive: right-size the unit, keep the propane tank ahead of winter if you're off the main, and book service before you're depending on the fire. We permit and pressure-test every gas line with your county's inspector. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
