Is it cheaper to run a fireplace on natural gas or propane?

In Waynesville, the answer splits by street: where a natural-gas main reaches you it's the cheaper fuel to run, but plenty of Haywood County homes sit on propane. And at nearly 2,650 feet your heating season runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's — so whichever fuel you're on, efficiency matters more here than almost anywhere we serve.

A longer, colder season magnifies the fuel gap

Waynesville averages ten to fifteen degrees colder than the lower WNC towns, and you'll run a fireplace from early fall into spring. Over that many burning hours, the per-BTU difference between piped natural gas and trucked propane adds up faster than it would down in Asheville. If a main serves your block, gas is the economical choice. If you're already a propane household, the fix isn't switching fuels — it's burning less of it.

Hazelwood's open fireboxes are the real leak

The older Hazelwood housing stock leans on original open masonry fireplaces, and up here those get run hard. An open firebox sends most of its heat, and a lot of heated room air, straight up the chimney; on a cold Haywood night it can cost you more than it gives. A sealed insert — gas or wood — with a properly sized liner changes the math, holding 70 percent or better of the heat in the room and cutting your fuel burn through the long season.

We permit it with Haywood County

Any gas line we run in Waynesville gets permitted with the Haywood County office and pressure-tested — a showroom or a mason can sell a firebox but can't legally connect it to fuel in North Carolina. That matters more at elevation, where a wrong-fuel or wrong-pressure setup soots and wastes gas. We're 35 minutes east in Asheville; call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
