Is it normal for gas fireplace glass to fog up when the fire first turns on?

Yes — a brief fog on the glass in the first few minutes after lighting a cold fireplace is completely normal. It's just condensation: warm combustion moisture hitting cold ceramic glass, the same as your bathroom mirror. As the glass heats up, the fog clears on its own. If it never clears or leaves a permanent film, that's different.

Why it fogs at start-up

When you light a cold gas fireplace, the burner produces water vapor as a completely normal product of combustion. That vapor meets glass that's still at room temperature — or colder, on a frigid mountain morning — and condenses into a thin fog, exactly the way your breath fogs a windowpane or steam clouds a bathroom mirror. Within a few minutes the glass warms past the point where moisture can condense on it, and the fog clears from the center outward as the panel heats. Cold WNC mornings, when the whole unit and the flue have been sitting at outdoor temperature overnight, make this more noticeable — not more concerning.

When brief fog is fine, and when it isn't

Normal start-up fog is light, fairly even across the glass, and gone within about five minutes of the flame establishing. A few things are worth watching, though. Fog that lingers long after the unit is fully hot, a film that stays behind once the fog burns off, or fogging paired with a strong or unusual odor all point past simple condensation. A persistent haze left behind is usually mineral film building up, which just wants cleaning. And on a ventless unit, heavy, fast condensation is worth noting, because vent-free burning adds real moisture to the room; a sealed direct-vent unit, by contrast, carries that moisture back outside.

Don't chase start-up fog — it's physics, not a fault, and every gas fireplace does it to some degree, some more than others depending on the room and the morning. If yours clouds briefly then clears and the glass stays clear once the unit is hot, you have nothing to fix and nothing to worry about. If instead each burn leaves you with a white haze or, worse, black soot on the glass, that's a cleaning or combustion question rather than condensation.
