Is it safe to burn candles inside an unused fireplace?

The firebox is built for flame — that's the point

A clean masonry or lined firebox is surrounded by the most fire-resistant construction in your house, which makes it a genuinely reasonable candle niche for a fireplace you're not using. It's a look we see all over Asheville. Keep the candles on a tray or stand so wax doesn't fuse to the firebox floor, keep the arrangement fully inside the opening where a draft can't push flame against the surround, and treat it like any open flame — out when you leave the room.

Two situations where the answer is no

Never set candles inside a gas fireplace or around gas logs. A direct-vent unit is sealed behind glass and was never meant to be opened up as a display shelf, and an open fireplace with vented logs still has a burner, a pilot, and gas plumbing under those logs — dripped wax on a burner is a service call, and open flame next to a gas assembly is a risk with no upside.

Skip it too if the firebox is coated in old soot and debris, or if kids and pets treat the hearth as a play zone. A knee-height flame is an invitation.

Soot, smoke, and the upgrade path

A few candles won't smoke up a room, but burn a dozen with the damper shut and you'll eventually film the firebox face and surround with fine soot — crack the damper when you run a big arrangement.
