Is it safe to hang stockings and garland on the mantel above a burning gas fireplace?
It can be, with real clearance and common sense. The danger is flammable decorations — garland, stockings, greenery, ribbon — dangling down toward the firebox opening and the hot glass. Keep everything up on the mantel with nothing draping below the mantel edge, and never leave the fireplace burning unattended with decorations up. Gas fireplace glass gets hot enough to ignite fabric on contact.
Where the real risk is
It's the glass. A direct-vent or most modern gas fireplaces run a hot glass front — hot enough to scorch or ignite anything that sags, blows, or falls against it. A stocking hung so it dangles down, a length of garland that droops, a dried evergreen swag over a low mantel — those are the setups that start trouble.
The mantel itself, up top, is generally the safe zone. The problem is anything that reaches down from it toward the opening.
Decorate it the safe way
Keep decorations back from the opening and up off the lower edge of the mantel. Secure garland so it physically can't droop toward the glass. Favor flame-resistant materials over dried greenery. Skip real candles anywhere near the unit — battery LED gives the same glow with none of the risk. And don't cover the vents; the fireplace needs its airflow.
Mind the clearances your unit was installed to. If your mantel sits low and close to the firebox — common in older Asheville homes and tight cabin rooms — be extra conservative about what hangs where.
Kids, pets, and the unattended fire
That same hot glass burns little hands and curious pets, so a safety screen or barrier is worth it during a house full of family — some units include one. And turn the fireplace off when you leave the room or head to bed rather than letting it run behind a mantel full of decorations.
