Is it safe to heat your home primarily with a gas fireplace running all day?
In Brevard, yes, with the right vented unit — but fuel shapes the plan. Downtown streets may reach natural gas, while the cabins around Connestee Falls and Pisgah Forest run on propane, which burns hotter and needs its own orifices and pressures. A sized, vented, serviced fireplace handles all-day heat; a vent-free one can't carry it.
Propane country changes the math
Most of Transylvania County outside the town center is propane, and that matters for all-day duty in two ways. First, a unit set up for propane needs the correct orifices and pressures — a natural-gas setup run on LP will soot and underperform, and that's licensed work we handle when we make the connection. Second, running a fireplace as primary heat draws steadily on the tank, so keep an eye on your level and coordinate top-offs with your propane supplier before a long cold stretch. We handle the appliance and gas side; the tank stays with your supplier.
Wet country is hard on chimneys
Brevard catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and it shows on masonry — cracked crowns, spalled brick, rusted dampers, and chimney chases and crawl spaces that stay damp. A compromised flue is a poor thing to run all day, every day. A sealed direct-vent fireplace vents out its own pipe and never depends on that aging masonry, which is often the cleanest fix for a wet-climate home. On an in-home assessment we look at the whole chase, not just the firebox.
Sizing and yearly service
Size to the room for primary heat — around 20 Btu per square foot as a baseline, more at Brevard's elevation — and keep a CO detector in the room as a matter of course. Book the tune-up in late summer, before you're depending on it, because spiders and dust clog the pilot and burner over the off-season.
