Is it worth replacing my old open-front B-vent gas fireplace with a sealed direct vent unit?
In Black Mountain, yes — the draft here is working against your old fireplace. Swannanoa Valley inversions leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and a cold flue sits in the chimney like a plug that an open-front B-vent has to fight every time you light it. A sealed direct-vent unit ignores all of that, and returns real heat besides.
Why draft is the local problem
Black Mountain and Montreat sit in a valley that pools cold air, ringed by heavily wooded ridges — and that terrain is hard on natural-draft fireplaces. Tall trees and steep slopes cause downdrafts, and on an inversion morning the cold column of air in the chimney resists the very draft an open-front B-vent needs to run. That's why these units often start sluggish and spill cool air into the room. A direct-vent unit is sealed and independent of that chimney entirely — it draws combustion air through its own pipe from outside, so a cold flue and a gusty ridge stop mattering.
More heat kept, less sent up the chimney
The draft fix comes with a heat bonus. An open-front B-vent pulls the room's warmed air to feed the flame and sends the bulk of the burner's output up the flue; a sealed direct-vent box keeps your room air out of it and hands most of the fuel back as warmth you feel across the room. In a shaded, cool-running Montreat house, that's the difference between a fireplace you sit on top of and one that actually heats the space.
The swap, permitted and close by
We're only 15 minutes east, so the in-home look is easy. The old firebox and B-vent come out, new venting goes in to spec, and the gas line is remade, pressure-tested, permitted with Buncombe County, and inspected — connecting fuel is licensed work in NC, and it's ours. Installation typically runs $3,500–$8,000 installed, and if outage heat matters we'll point you to a unit that lights without the grid. The assessment is free. Call (828) 545-0525.
