Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Clyde, North Carolina

Is the original masonry chimney in my older Asheville home safe to reuse for gas logs or an insert, or does it need a new liner first?

Clyde's 1960s-through-'80s ranch homes are classic insert-upgrade candidates — dated fireplaces that could throw real heat with the right unit. Vented logs can reuse a masonry flue that scans sound and correctly sized; a sealed insert needs its own stainless liner. But river humidity here degrades masonry and rusts dampers, so the older the flue, the more likely an inspection turns up work.

Ranch-Era Fireplaces, Humid Valley Air

A lot of Clyde is single-story ranch and split-level homes from the 1960s through the '80s, and their fireplaces tend to be dated — an open masonry box or an early prefab that is more decorative than warm. They are good candidates for an insert that actually heats. But Clyde shares the lower Pigeon valley's damp, and river humidity is quietly hard on a chimney: it rusts dampers, corrodes caps, and works moisture into mortar and clay tile faster than a drier location. So whatever the home's age, we camera-scan the flue before assuming it can be reused.

If it is an older masonry chimney, an oversized flue combined with that moisture wear often means a liner is the sound call for an insert — and sometimes the honest answer even for logs.

Cold Drainage and Haywood Permits

Like neighboring Canton and Waynesville, Clyde catches cold-air drainage that settles into the valley on clear nights, so homes here work their fireplaces hard through a long season. A sealed insert with a right-sized stainless liner delivers efficient, power-optional heat; vented logs reuse a sound flue for ambiance.

We pull the Haywood County permit and meet the inspector, and pressure-test any gas line we run. Clyde is about twenty-five minutes west of our Asheville shop, so we pair the inspection and install. Call (828) 545-0525.
