Plug-in vs hardwired electric fireplace — which is better?

For a permanent installation, hardwired is better — no cord on the wall, a dedicated circuit, and a finished, built-in look. For everything else, plug-in wins on simplicity: it runs off a standard 120-volt outlet and moves when you do. Heat output is essentially the same either way — most electric fireplaces top out around 1,500 watts, roughly 5,000 BTU of supplemental warmth.

The case for plug-in

A plug-in electric fireplace runs off a standard 120-volt household outlet. No electrician, no wall surgery, no commitment — hang it, plug it in, done. If you're in a rental, a starter home, or you simply want flame ambiance without a project, this is the answer. The tradeoff is the cord: it's visible unless you get creative, and the unit shares its circuit with whatever else is plugged in nearby, so a toaster or a vacuum on the same run can trip a breaker mid-movie.

The case for hardwiring

Hardwiring connects the fireplace to its own dedicated circuit inside the wall — no cord, no shared breaker, and the clean, finished look that recessed installations are chosen for. Most flush-mounted and built-in installs are hardwired for exactly that reason: if you're already opening the wall to recess the unit, a visible cord would undo the whole effect. It's permanent, which is either the drawback or the whole point. The electrical side belongs to a licensed electrician — we coordinate that as part of the installation rather than doing electrical work as a trade ourselves — and the result is a fireplace that looks like the house was built around it.

What doesn't change either way

The heat. On a normal residential circuit, electric fireplaces top out around 1,500 watts — roughly 5,000 BTU — which supplements a room up to about 400 square feet but won't carry a house. That ceiling applies to plug-in and hardwired units alike.
