What built-ins do for the wall

Flanking a fireplace with built-in shelving or cabinetry turns a plain wall into a designed one. You get closed cabinets below for media gear, games, and clutter, open shelves above for books and objects, and a symmetrical frame that makes the fireplace read as the centerpiece it should be. In older Asheville homes with a chimney breast that leaves recessed alcoves on either side, built-ins fill those niches perfectly — that's practically what the space was asking for. They're also our go-to fix for an off-center fireplace, since a run of cabinetry can rebalance the whole wall.

Mind the heat and the clearances

Here's where we come in. A fireplace throws heat, and a running gas unit's surround and nearby surfaces get warm — so cabinetry, shelving, and any wood trim have to respect the manufacturer's clearances to combustibles. Adjacent built-ins can't crowd the firebox opening, and a mantel or shelf directly above has its own minimum distance.
