Yes, and Marshall carries a wrinkle worth naming: some of these old homes and the farmhouses out this way started life burning coal, and a coal flue is not automatically safe for wood or gas. Add steep hillside lots that complicate draft, and a pre-purchase inspection isn't a formality — it's how you avoid inheriting a chimney that never fit its fire.
A coal chimney isn't a wood chimney
Coal burns differently than wood, and flues built or used for coal were sized and lined for it. Over the years owners switch fuels — wood stoves vented into masonry never built for them, gas logs dropped in without an inspection — and the flue that results can be wrong for what's actually burning in it. On Marshall's older homes that history is common and invisible from the hearth. We put a camera through the flue and evaluate whether it's genuinely safe for the fuel you intend, something a general home inspector can't judge.
Steep lots, tight draft
Marshall's homes cling to steep hillsides above the French Broad, and the narrow multi-story downtown buildings are built right against the mountainside. That terrain complicates chimney routing and draft — cool, damp gorge air and tall surrounding ridges cause the downdrafts that push smoke back into a room. An inspection checks that the flue actually drafts, not just that it exists. If it's a gas home, we test the line too, as a licensed gas contractor.
