Should I skip having a fire on air quality alert or burn ban days?

In Fletcher, most homes already have the setup that ignores these days — the 1990s subdivisions along the I-26 corridor came with builder-grade sealed gas fireplaces, and those make no meaningful smoke, so an air-quality alert or a Henderson County burn ban doesn't touch them. It's the older open or wood-burning fireplaces that should ease off on a Code Orange day.

A town built for it, mostly

Fletcher's growth came in 1990s-era subdivisions and steady new construction along the I-26 corridor, and a lot of that housing came with sealed gas fireplaces from the start. For those homes, an air-quality alert is a non-event — a direct-vent gas unit puts out essentially no particulate, so there's nothing to skip. The commercial and airport-area properties that favor gas fireplaces and outdoor features are in the same boat.

The homes that should still ease off

Not everything in Fletcher is sealed gas, though. Older homes with an open masonry fireplace or a wood stove are the ones that add smoke to a bad-air day, and on a declared Code Orange it's worth resting the wood — especially if someone in the house has asthma, COPD, or heart trouble, or you're in a low, still pocket where smoke settles on a cool valley night. If that builder-grade box is tired, a sealed insert is a clean upgrade.

Henderson County bans

A burn ban from Henderson County or the NC Forest Service is about outdoor open fire during dry, high-risk weather — brush, debris, the fire pit — not the appliance heating your home or business. The order itself is the final word, so read it. Questions about upgrading an aging fireplace? Call (828) 545-0525; we're 20 minutes south.
