Should I stub in a gas line for a future fireplace while my house is being built?

Yes — and on Marshall's steep, tight hillside lots, stubbing during the build is worth even more than usual. Running a gas line through finished walls in a narrow multi-story house wedged against the mountainside is a genuine headache; roughing a capped, pressure-tested stub while the framing is open sidesteps all of it. We permit through Madison County here.

Tight lots reward doing it now

Marshall's homes climb steep hillsides, and its revitalized downtown is stacked narrow and multi-story against the mountain. That geometry makes a future gas-line retrofit slow and invasive — floors to fish, walls to open on multiple levels.

Roughing the stub while everything is open studs turns a hard job into an easy one and locks in your fireplace option cheaply, before the finishes and tight framing make it a project all over again.

Gorge draft favors a sealed unit

The French Broad gorge pushes cool, damp evening air and swirling drafts that can disrupt an open chimney. A sealed direct-vent fireplace, fed by the stub you rough in now, vents out a sidewall and shrugs that off.

Marshall is mixed-fuel, so we confirm natural gas versus propane at your address and size the line for whichever serves you — with the tank coordinated through your supplier if it's LP.

Permitted with Madison County

Gas piping is licensed work, so your builder coordinates the trades but can't connect the fuel. We run and cap the line at rough-in, pressure-test it, and pull the Madison County permit so the inspector signs off before the walls close.
