Vent-free gas insert vs direct-vent gas insert — which should I put in my fireplace?
For most Asheville homes it's the direct-vent insert, though the honest call splits by neighborhood. A Montford or North Asheville house with an original masonry chimney is built for a sealed direct-vent unit and a fresh liner. Those pre-war fireboxes around Montford and Kenilworth were built to burn wood, and left open one can lose more heat up the flue than it puts into the room. Slide a direct-vent insert down the existing chimney — a Napoleon Oakville X4, or a Kozy Heat Chaska 25L with its standard blower — and that same masonry becomes a heater running 70% efficient or better, every byproduct piped safely outside. The newer rooms south of the river and out toward Biltmore Park seal up tight, and tight construction is precisely where vent-free's moisture has nowhere to escape.
Where vent-free tempts, and where it bites
We won't pretend vent-free has no case.
