Why a standard log set looks wrong from the second room

A conventional vented log set is staged like theater scenery — tall logs across the back, charred detail and glowing embers facing forward, grate and burner hardware hidden from one direction only. Drop that into a see-through firebox and the dining room gets the show while the living room stares at the back of the stack. A true see-through arrangement is symmetrical: bark texture and char detail on both faces, a grate that reads finished from either side, and burner ports aimed so the flame performs for both rooms at once.

Be honest about the heat

Vented gas logs are ambiance-first. The damper stays open, the flame is tall and gorgeous, and most of the heat goes up the chimney — and a firebox open to two rooms gives that warmth even more ways to leave. That's not a flaw; it's what the product is. If you love the double-sided look but want the fireplace to genuinely warm the space, the better conversation is a sealed direct-vent see-through gas fireplace — a different appliance entirely, and one we install too.

Sizing and the gas connection

Measure both openings — width, height, and especially depth, since see-through fireboxes run deeper than standard ones and the set has to sit centered so neither room feels shorted. And remember the part that isn't a styling decision: in North Carolina, running or extending the gas line that feeds those logs is licensed work.
