What certifications should a chimney sweep have?
Out on Mills River's large rural lots, many homes run on propane rather than a gas main, which makes the North Carolina gas contractor's license central — plus NFI certification on the appliance and CSIA for any masonry chimney. Propane changes what to ask
Mills River is mixed-fuel country with a lot of propane, and propane is not natural gas with a different label — it burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures, so a wrong setup soots the glass and wastes fuel. NFI certification tells you a technician was actually tested on gas appliances and their conversions. But the connection itself — regulator, piping, appliance setup — is licensed contractor work in North Carolina, and no certification substitutes for that license. That's why we tell folks to ask two separate questions: is your technician certified, and are you a licensed gas contractor?
Outdoor gas is the same license
The open Mills River valley is built for outdoor living, and a lot of homeowners here add gas fire pits and patio features. Buried, outdoor-rated gas lines are still licensed work — the same rule that governs the line to an indoor fireplace. A landscaper or hardscaper can build a beautiful surround, but legally can't run the fuel to it. We do that part, permit it with Henderson County, and pressure-test the line. Plan those installs in late spring, before entertaining season.
If you've got a masonry chimney
Some Mills River properties still have a real masonry fireplace, and for that you want a CSIA-certified sweep on the flue — trained on creosote, liners, and inspection to NFPA 211 standards. Whatever the fuel, ask for liability insurance, a written report, and an upfront repair quote.
