What inspections happen after a gas fireplace is installed?

A county inspector checks the gas line and the appliance. On most jobs that means a pressure test on the piping and a mechanical/gas inspection of the connection, venting, and clearances once the unit's set. We schedule it, meet the inspector, and don't consider the job done until it passes. Some counties do a rough-in and a final.

Two visits, sometimes

Depending on your county, a gas fireplace install gets one inspection or two. On a job that opens up a wall to run new line, the inspector often wants a rough-in look while the piping is exposed, then a final once the unit's set and the wall's closed. A simpler connection may be a single final. Either way, the county — Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, or Transylvania — sends an inspector, and we meet them so you don't have to take a day off work to stand in for us.

What the inspector verifies

The inspection is a safety checklist, not a formality. The inspector confirms the gas line holds a pressure test with no leaks, the venting terminates where code allows and is sealed correctly, the clearances to combustibles match the appliance's listing, and carbon monoxide protection is in place. On direct-vent units they're checking the sealed system; on vented logs, that the damper and connection are right. Nothing about the flame gets signed off until the plumbing behind it does.

Why we're there in person

We don't drop the unit and hand you an inspection date. We schedule the inspection, meet the inspector on site, walk the work with them, and handle anything they want adjusted on the spot. That's the difference between a permit number and a permit that actually closes out clean. When the inspector signs it, the job's done — and you've got the record that proves it.
