What is a circulating fireplace?
A circulating fireplace is built with an air chamber wrapped around the firebox, so cool room air flows in low, picks up heat off the hot metal, and rolls back out warm at the top — usually with a blower pushing it. Instead of only radiating heat out the front like an open masonry fireplace, it actively moves warmed air into the room.

The design is a double wall: the firebox sits inside an outer shell, with a gap between them. Room air enters through lower grilles, travels up through that gap hugging the hot firebox, and exits through upper grilles as warm, moving air. It's the same idea whether it's an old-school circulating masonry form or a modern zero-clearance unit — you're heating air by convection and delivering it, not just radiating heat off a front opening and hoping it spreads.
Circulating versus a plain radiant firebox
A radiant-only firebox warms what's directly in front of it and little else. A circulating design spreads heat through the room, evens out the temperature, and covers a noticeably larger area — especially once a blower is moving the air. Heatilator, Majestic, and Napoleon all build circulating gas units. And here's the upgrade path a lot of WNC homeowners take: dropping an insert into a leaky open masonry fireplace effectively turns it into a sealed circulating heater running 70% efficient or better.

Circulating shines in bigger open living areas and when you want to zone-heat one part of the house while the rest stays cool — exactly the mountain-home layouts we see weekly.
