What is a key valve on a fire pit and do I need one?
A key valve is the on/off gas valve for a fire pit that you operate with a removable metal key — turn it to release gas to the burner, turn it back to shut off. On a match-lit fire pit, yes, you need one; it's your only gas control. On an electronic-ignition pit, a key valve often still serves as the manual master shutoff.
How it works, plainly
The valve body is plumbed into the gas line inside the fire-pit enclosure or a patio wall, with a keyed stem poking through a small escutcheon plate on the outside. You slip the star-shaped key on, turn a quarter to half turn to open the gas, light the burner with a match, lighter, or built-in igniter, then turn the key the other way to shut it down. The removable key is a feature, not an afterthought — pull it and drop it in a drawer, and little hands can't turn the gas on. On a straightforward match-lit propane or natural-gas pit, the key valve is the whole control system.
When you need one — and when you want both
If your fire pit is match-lit, the key valve isn't optional; it's how the pit turns on and off. If you step up to electronic or push-button ignition — a nicer experience, especially at a vacation rental or Airbnb where guests won't fuss with matches — the burner has its own controls, but we usually still install a key valve or manual shutoff as the master. That way there's a hard mechanical way to cut the gas for the season or for service, independent of any battery or spark module. Two layers of control, no downside.
Placement is where it goes right or wrong
The trick is reach and safety at the same time. The valve should be close enough to work comfortably but far enough from the flame that you're not reaching over fire to shut it off — code sets minimum distances for exactly this reason. We set the valve, cut the escutcheon into the stone or metal cleanly, and confirm it operates before the pit is ever lit, all as part of a permitted, pressure-tested install.
