What is fire glass and how does it work in a fireplace?
Fire glass is tempered, tumbled glass media that sits over the burner in a linear gas fireplace or gas fire pit in place of logs. It doesn't burn, melt, or produce smoke — it simply absorbs the flame's heat and throws it back into the room while the flame dances through it for a clean, modern look.
What it actually is
Fire glass is made from tempered or specially formulated glass, tumbled smooth so there are no sharp edges, then rated to take direct flame without discoloring, popping, or breaking down. Regular glass, mirror, or landscaping stone would fog over or shatter — fire glass is engineered for the job.
It comes in a range of colors and finishes — clear, bronze, cobalt, reflective — and the color you choose changes the whole personality of the fire, from a cool blue shimmer to a warm amber glow.
How it works over the burner
Under the glass sits the burner, and gas rises up through the bed. Because the glass is inert, all it does is sit in the flame, heat up, and radiate that warmth back out — much like ceramic logs do in a traditional unit, just with a contemporary face.

The glass, the burner, and the appliance have to be matched. Every manufacturer specs an exact media type and depth for their burner — too much glass smothers the flame and can cause sooting or incomplete combustion, too little wastes the effect.
