What is fireplace refacing and what does it involve?
A Brevard fireplace reface changes the surface you see — new stone, tile, or a rebuilt surround — while the firebox stays put. But in Transylvania County, where 80-plus inches of rain a year spalls brick and cracks masonry, the reface starts with a moisture check: you can't bond new stone to a wall that's flaking apart behind the pretty finish.
Rain writes the rules here
Brevard's wet season runs March through June, and that relentless moisture is hard on masonry — spalled brick faces, crumbling mortar, rusted dampers, cracked crowns. If we're refacing an exterior surface or a chimney chase, freeze-thaw at 2,230 feet adds another demand: the veneer, the setting mortar, and the sealer all have to be rated for water and cold, or the new face fails the same way the old one did. Indoors it's more forgiving, but a damp chase still gets inspected before we ever cover it.
Sound base first, finish second
Refacing is skin-deep by design — we keep the working firebox and flue and change the wall around them. That only holds up if the wall underneath is solid. On Brevard's downtown homes and cabins we confirm the masonry is dry and tight, address any spalling or loose mortar, prep the surface, then set your chosen stone or tile clean around the opening. Cover a moisture problem and you've hidden it, not fixed it — so the base work comes before anyone picks a stone.
Propane country and the clearance line
Out toward the cabins, most Brevard homes run on propane, and while a straight reface is cosmetic, pairing it with a new propane insert or log set is licensed gas work — we permit it with Transylvania County and set the regulator and orifices for LP, then pressure-test the line. Around the opening, the clearance to combustibles governs every material choice. Forty minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom — call (828) 545-0525 for a free reface assessment.
