What is secondary combustion — what are the tubes at the top of a wood stove firebox?
Secondary combustion is a second burn that ignites the smoke your fire gives off before it escapes up the chimney. Those metal tubes across the top of the firebox are secondary-air tubes: they inject preheated air into the hot smoke, lighting it on fire again. That reburn is what makes a modern non-catalytic stove clean and efficient — more heat per log, far less pollution.
Smoke is wasted fuel
When wood burns, the first stage releases gases and fine particles — that's smoke, and it's loaded with unburned energy. In an old stove or an open fireplace, all of it goes straight up the chimney: wasted heat, and the raw material that becomes creosote on your flue walls.
Secondary combustion recovers it. Get the smoke hot enough — roughly 1,100°F and up — and mix in fresh oxygen, and it ignites: a second fire, fed by the first fire's exhaust.
What the tubes do
The tubes you see spanning the top of the firebox are how a non-catalytic stove pulls that off. They're fed by a separate air channel that runs along the hot stove body, so the air inside is already preheated by the time it reaches them. Small holes along each tube jet that hot air down into the smoke layer sitting under the baffle.
When conditions are right, you'll see rippling flames dancing off the tubes near the top of the firebox with no wood touching them — that's the smoke itself burning. A steel baffle above the tubes traps the gases long enough for the reburn to finish before they head up the flue.
Why it matters to you
This is the technology that lets a modern EPA-certified stove run 75% efficient or better while barely smoking. You get noticeably more heat from the same cord of wood, and because you're burning the smoke instead of venting it, far less creosote builds up in your chimney — which means less sweeping and lower chimney-fire risk.
